PETITIONS

It’s petition season in New York State!

Over the next few weeks, if you’re a registered voter, there’s a chance someone may knock on your door asking for your signature.

Here's why:
In New York State, candidates are required to collect a certain number of valid signatures to appear on the ballot. That means volunteers from both major parties will be visiting registered members of their own party to gather those signatures.

Signing a petition does not mean you’re committing to vote for that person.

It simply allows their name to appear on the ballot so voters have a choice. It’s one of the ways we make sure elections are competitive and open.

Keep in mind:

  • You may only sign for candidates in the party you’re registered with

  • You may only sign once per candidate

If you’ve already signed for someone and another volunteer comes by later, just let them know.

  • You may be asked to sign multiple petitions, one for each candidate

Please keep in mind, the people knocking are volunteers, giving up their time so that elections can happen properly and lawfully. If you’re not interested, simply let them know and they’ll be on their way.

Gathering these signatures is a tireless task for those walking petitions, so please welcome them and sign the appropriate petitions as this is only way to get candidates to appear on the ballot.
